2nd-hand Status bass

I recently bought a second-hand Status bass, which was described as an S2-Classic thru-neck. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything more about it – whether it is in fact an S2-Classic, when it was made and what material (is it wood?) is used on the wings. I have attached a photograph. There is a number “1748” stamped on the side of the bridge.

I found it in a local guitar shop. I just enjoyed how it felt and the great sounds I could get out of it. It also stays in tune very well and is somehow easier to re-tune than other basses I have used. I love it, whatever it is!

It looks more like an Empathy to me than an S2. Someone on here will now for sure. Awesome looking bass. Congrats.

I don't think it's an Emapthy. They had the pre amp controls placed differently. More like a very early S2 Classic.

That's an Empathy alright! Maybe!!!

I think I used to own it. Will have to check my folder when I get home.

The simple way to tell is the fact that the graphite sits in a wooden centre piece and it has a book matched back.

Does it have a book matched back??

If it does, it's an Empathy!

Thanks for your replies!

EDIT: This website is not letting me upload another picture, but I would say it's not bookmatched. Moo, it would be amazing if you did own it! There must be lots of basses out there, and I am in Australia. But of course it's not impossible.

Any thoughts on the veneer on the front? Reflected highlights from the wood grain seems to move as the surface is tilted, similar to the effect with woven carbon fibre.

BTW I also emailed Status directly with my query a few days ago but I can understand that my idle curiosity doesn't have very high priority compared to making beautiful instruments and looking after customers!

The front veneer looks a very nice 'Tiger Stripe' maple. Various descriptions are often applied to maple, Flamed, burred etc. Lovely top wood of the lighter colours. Looks like a great bass, nice find.

No back book matching... Series II 'Matrix' (as it's headed).

Lovely flamed maple or 'tiger stripe'.

Great bass... Lucky boy!!
