I've just bought an Energy 4 string. It has a 4 digit serial number, j type pickups and plastic knobs on the body. The markers on the side of the neck appear to be brass nails that have been put in very carefully. I'm guessing its quite old. Anyone out there who can date this?

If your bass has J type pickups, then it might be one of the first Energy basses produced by Status in 1991 if I'm not wrong. A photo would help.
The first Energy basses had the same shape as Series II basses. But it changed around 1994. You should check the catalogues link of this wonderful web site to get more details : http://statii.com/status_cats/1index.html

...Or ask André ; he's the Obi Wan Kenobi of Status basses :D

Pictures and the serial number are really the only way to give you more info Pete!

My headed Energy has the serial number 1668 and according to the original "Limited Lifetime Warranty" card it was completed on 11-12-1992. It also owns the J/J pickups and the BPI circuit.
This may help ... :)
Always one string ahead ...
