Re: Hiss / Noise in older electronics normal / fault?
Hello All!
I recently bought a used Status S1 with the "Series 1"-circuit as shown on the Status Graphite webpage. The bass is lovely, it plays and sounds excellent.
However, the bass introduces quite some noise / hiss which i do not like so much. So i already contacted Rob Green directly. He was so kind to reply, but could not judge from a distance (I live in Germany) if my circuit is damaged or if it is the normal behavior.
So my question is, has anyone of you also experienced hiss in an older circuit? I´m considering to by a new circuit from Status, but if the hiss won´t disappear that would be no good investment, of course.
Thanks for any replies!

P.S: I know, I know, no picture, no bass, so is the picture of my bass visible when included as attachment???

Re: Phenolic Fingerboard
The 3-band EQ/mid switch on my two fretless Status basses give me all the potential for Mwaaaah that I need.
D’adarrio Chrome flats are what I use on both the headed and headless Statii. They are brighter than most flats and vibrato up and down the neck is more comfortable with them as well.
Overall, sound great and are less destructive than roundwounds and string bending, if you are concerned.

Re: Phenolic Fingerboard
Second that.My Fretless is Not a Status, has an ebony fingerboard but again, you play to get the Sound you want. Wear and tear is normal. If your main goal is to avoid wear and tear, Not playing is most effective.

Re: Phenolic Fingerboard
Thanks Chris, I'm leaning more towards leaving everything alone. If it ever gets bad enough that the wear affects the notes, I'm sure there are some remedies that can fix it. Thanks again.

Re: Phenolic Fingerboard
Hello,
I have a Status Fretless bass that has a graphite neck and phenolic board. I bought it new in 2008 and play it all the time. I play a lot of upright bass, so I have medium gauge round wound strings in the fretless. There are a few marks on the phenolic fingerboard but nothing to worry about and definitely much better than having a wood fingerboard.... I think phenolic fingerboards are the main reason to get a Status fretless.
I definitely would not coat the neck.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Re: Phenolic Fingerboard
Hello, and thank you for your help. Has anyone epoxy coated their fretless Phenolic fingerboard, as an added layer of protection against the wear from using round wound strings? Interested in hearing any thoughts on the subject. I play with a fairly light touch and my vibrato is side to side, still the wear is beginning to show. A coating would protect the board but would also increase the high end, my Stealth is fully covered in that area. Don't want to change string gauges. Light sanding when the damage starts to affect the notes? Please inform me of the obvious and the not so obvious solutions to the future problem lieing in wait. Thanks again. Everyone please take care and stay safe. It's crazy out there.

Re: Poor Low B sound on Empathy Headless 5
Try different strings, even if not double-ball.
Lighter gauge perhaps (though I don't tune down)?
I run Dean Markley 128-40 on my mid-90s Empathy 5.
Plays and sounds fabulously.
The B string has a lot of windings hanging on the core of the string.
If it isn't tight, it will sound dead.

Have fun jammin'

Re: Poor Low B sound on Empathy Headless 5
Hello fellow Status peeps!
I have an Empathy from the early 90's owed from new, and have never found the open low B to sound right. It seems to sound tonally out and doesn't resonate properly, even with the intonation right.
I've lived with it but now the problem is exacerbated as my current band tunes down a full tone so I'm playing open A.
I cringe when playing the note now!
I'm using Hotwire double ball end 45 -130, Trace Elliot V4 or V8 head and 4x10 + 2x10 at gigs. Trace Elf with Ashdown 6x10 at rehearsals, so no problems on the amp/cab side. The Empathy has a fixed neck with no truss rod.
Any advice welcome!
Thanks guys!

Re: Sillica Packets
Hello, and thanks for your help. You know those little sillica packets that come with nearly everything that gets shipped to you, meant to get rid of moisture? It's been a long hot humid summer here in the states. Is it safe to put a few small ones in the case of my Stealth Fretless to help dry out the case? I know they tell you not to do it for regular wood guitars, but there isn't any wood involved with a Stealth build. Thanks again for your help. Hope everyone everywhere, is healthy and safe, take care.

Re: Old Status Series II - Circuit
Have acquired an old status bass series II.
The old electronic has been replaced but is still there.
Unfortunately I don't have a wiring diagram.
If someone has an old series II bass (from the 80s), could you please take photos of the wiring?
Thx Dieter

Re: First time string change and Fret board cleaning
Thanks for the reassurance. On the Status Site, I think it's in the FAQ'S , that WD 40 is safe for the fretboard only, not the body, and to use it sparingly. There's more detailed directions. Thanks again, and Happy New Year

Re: First time string change and Fret board cleaning
No procedure, the necks are so stable you can take all the strings off and it wont move. I don't know about the WD40. I have only ever used a furniture polish on my KB neck and body, which is what Mr Green used on my bass when I collected it.
