Thread subject: STATII.COM: For all things Status-Graphite :: Chris Wolstenholme - Muse

Anyone notice Chris Wolstenholme playing what looks like a S2 headless 4 string for the opening song at the Teignmouth gig currently showing on the BBC's red button? Gave me quite a smile, though he reverts to his other basses for the remaining songs that they're showing in that short loop. Will keep my eye out when I see Muse at the O2 in Nov to see what he's playing then.

Yeh, I noticed that. Just to be pedantic I think it might be a series II.

That is a very very early Series II I would stick my neck out and say it's a re-badged Strata due to the 'shiny' knobs! oooooo matron!! If only we lived in a world where the crap in the movies was true... I could access a spy satellite and zoom in on the bass through several thick brick walls and read the S/N!! Grin Or just ask him I suppose!

Does anyone know what kind of tunings he uses?

I don't think we need to be that kind to him. Clearly keeping him alive will make him suffer even more from embarassment. "sounds brilliant" so that's why he smothers it in distortion or whatever it is.

That's disappointing, I always thought he was so open towards basses that don't look like your plain old Fender. Also, didn't he recently come up with the amazing piece of wisdom that slapping has never been cool? Looks like someone has a bit of growing up to do.

On a positive note, the bass player of one of the biggest bands in the world plays a status not becuase of look, but because of sound. That got Status a mention in two different bass mags (it's listed as one of his main basses in US Bass player mag).

"And then just as a joke, somebody said, “Why don’t you just try playing slap bass?” So I did it, and initially everyone was laughing their asses off. Then we went back and listened to it, and we thought, “If we make the sound edgy enough, it could actually sound quite cool.” So we put a Hematoma pedal on it. I had a very slight, top-endy distortion to crunch it up a little. Obviously the danger with slap bass is if you go for that super-clean, twangy, “nice” bass sound, it ends up sounding like Level 42." Yaeh right,Chris.... dis the L42 sound all you want...like no-one's ever had the incredibly original thought of putting distortion on their bass before Muse, have they?Sad

AND while talking of 'ugly' instruments... What the **** is the guitarist playing?? I think I made something like that in 4th year woodwork! And let's not forget... I spent most of the 4th year drunk as an Irish footballer!!

"Muse-speak"..what Chris "my head is stuck up my arse alongside my Behringer overdrive pedal" Wolstenholme really meant.... "And then just as a joke, somebody said, “Why don’t you just try playing slap bass?” So I did it, and initially everyone was laughing their asses off. (at my utter ineptitude) Then we went back and listened to it, and we thought, “If we make the sound edgy enough, it could actually sound quite cool.” (I actually quite like the sound of this, but I'm a little out of my blinkered little bass "zone" so I better not enjoy it too much) So we put a Hematoma pedal on it. I had a very slight, top-endy distortion to crunch it up a little(and make me feel like I'm back in "control" again-in case the label and my cool art student Coldplay mates laugh at me for ruining my "originality"Wink Obviously the danger with slap bass is if you go for that super-clean, twangy, “nice” bass sound, it ends up sounding like Level 42."(and I certainly don't want to be thought of as one of the most popular and inspirational British bass players of all time-no sirree.) Or something like that...Grin
