monorail bridge question

First I want to say that my '99 S-2 Classic is one of the best, if not the best built bass I have ever owned or played. My question (and maybe it's just me) is that the monorail bridge which does a fantastic job for adjustments and tone, has a a number of sharp edges. What I mean is that if the bass is at Mark King height and one wants to slap, the underside of your arm rests or comes in contact with the bridge. If you have an aggressive style the sharp edges of the bridge can become abrasive to the point of causing a potential hazard to one's underarm. I have learned to wear long sleeves or wear the bass lower to avoid this issue but recently I have been considering a search for a replacement bridge (the monorail is four separate pieces...see photo). Thanks for any feedback. --Tom

I know this problem, I had a sharp one. I took a needle file to the edge and rounded it of a little, I didn't want to but the options were limited, I did that 3 years ago and glad I did, you can barely see it and it makes that nasty little jab it gives a thing of the past. If your bass is 15 yrs old now, just file it, it's not a museum piece, it's an instrument that you play and it needs to be comfortable IMHO

Nice job. What are the bridge pieces?

Yeah, looking good. I don't think they are as asthetically pleasing to the eye but you know what, sometimes if something drives you mad enough, anything else will do! It might be that they actually have more adjustment than the ones Rob uses?? Maybe more sustain? Whatever, hope you are happy!

Jeff Babicz was the lead engineer at Steinberger when they were in Newburgh, NY USA and his full contact bridge design brings more contact from the string to the bass. How does it sound now? Just curious.

I've had some time with the Babicz bridge and I believe it is a better bridge and is more comfortable to play in my case. More sustain and I personally love how it looks. Glad I made this change...I love my S-2 even more now. If only Babicz had these monorails a few years ago.

For me, this is the most common issue with Rob's basses. He does an amazing job on everything that's done in house but these monorails cause some real issues. I know at least 3 bass players who have reluctantly sold their Status basses because of this.

You should ping Rob with your thoughts.

Did the new bridge pieces fit exactly or did you need to drill new holes??

I had to drill new holes but luckily I was able to use one hole from each section of the old bridge so that I could accurately keep the same spacing.
