After years I just had a listen to the excellent debut album of the Art-Prog-Rock-Band It Bites called 'The Big Lad in the Windmill' and you can clearly hear the Status growl of Dick Nolans Series II.
Then I came across this TOP clip from 1986 I believe where they perform their hit 'Calling all the Heroes' with DN and his Status. One of the most underrated bands of the 80s...

I have been a huge fan of It Bites from day one!!
I saw them live in Bristol back in 1980 something... They were 4 very talented musicians!
Stefano, when I get back to the UK I'll send you all their albums in MP3 and also Francis Dunnery's solo album.
Really good stuff!!
:D

I love It Bites. I got to see them back in '88 (or was it '89) at the Roadmender in Northampton on their 'Once Around the World' tour. They played the whole album from start to finish. Brilliant gig.
John,
thanks for making the link clickable;)...by the way how does that work?
Darren,
unfortunately I never got the chance to see them live, but I would have loved to...
Moo,
thanks a lot for the mp3s, I already have their 3 studio albums and the superb live cd 'Thank you & Goodnight', but would really love to get Francis Dunnery's solo album!
Great band really, had a look on their website yesterday. It seems they will record a new album, but with a new guitarist/singer...
I love the 'The Big Lad in the Windmill' album, very good bass work and the sound of the bass....oh man!!!!!
Afterwords Dick Nolan changed to a Zon bass which also sounds great, you can hear it here on a live recording of the song "Turn Me Loose" (also from the TBLITW album - great Francis Dunnery guitar solo BTW)

After that album they became less 80's pop and more Bon-Jovi/Heart American "girly-rock" style with all that long hair stuff (IMHV) - not my taste...
"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses."

17 years agoAlso a big It Bites and Francis Dunnery fan.
If you like the quirkiness of The Big Lad album you'll also like Once Around the World (their best in my opinion) and Eat Me in St Louis. Also the live album Thank You and Goodnight... superb musicianship. Francis' voice is incredibly distinctive. Saw them live twice at Hammersmith in late 80s/early 90s. Really solid, tight and distinctive.
I think the band (sans Frank) is still recording - www.itbites.com. Worth a look.
Saw Frank with an electric band last week in Bristol (www.francisdunnery.com) with Nathan King on bass - really good. Seeing him at a friend's house concert on Wednesday too - if you're a fan of his this is a must (basically he plays in your front room).

There was a funny thing on youtube (can't find it now) where Francis Dunnery was being interviewed and he was talking about his guitars. He had a Fender Strat and a cheaper Squire and he was saying how he preferred the Squire...
Very funny and 80's
:D

I think I remember the TV show that was from - it was a history of the electric guitar and had about 10 mins with Frank talking during the recording of the OATW album - the best bits were shots of the band recording the title track..
In a similar vein - somewhere at my parents house is an old VHS of It Bites live at the Town & Country Club from their EMISL tour..
Saw Francis last night at a House Concert at my friend's place in Wellow. Basically he sat, chatted and played acoustic in his front room to 20 people. Awesome. Really lovely guy. And really funny.
Now have a wine red Washburn Status 1000 c1989 - electrics need a bit of work but it's lush. :-)

That would be cool!!
Must try to organise that!

It Bites are touring soon for their new album. Don't know about Dick's bass preferences these days though. He was playing Zons in the late 80s...
I would love to see them again!

...not sure Dick is still in the band - a pal of mine has been offered the bass role for the tour (unfortunately he's a non status player!)
Hello everyone.
I too was a huge It Bites fan from way back when their "All in Red" single was released. I must have seen them play live getting on fifty times!
I got to know them quite well back then, talking at after shows and things. I was discussing with Dick once, in Germany actually, about his change from STATUS to the ZON. I was going to get a Status at the time partly because of the incredible sound Dick was getting from his. His was a Series 2000 all graphite with GMT pickups, played thru a Trace Elliot AH250 amp with 4x10 and 1x15 cabs. Asking about two particular tracks "Heartbreaker" and "Strange but true" (B-side of All in Red and Calling all the heroes respectively) he said he also put it thru a gate and compressor to get that squashy sound.
He changed to a ZON Legacy because he said they could never get the Status loud enough or bassy enough in the mix apparently. He had two, a black one and a white one which I only ever saw him use once (miming on BBC1s WOGAN show performing "Kiss like judas") It never played as well as the black one that he always used.
Dick later added a Warwick 6 string a Yamaha BB1200 Fretless and a 1963 Fender Jazz bass to his collection also changing to a MESA/BOOGIE 400Bass Head with 1x15, 1x10,1x6 MB cabs.
Incidently the guitar show that featured Francis and the band was called Equinoxe and was on CH4 about 1987/88.
Dick has now left It Bites being replaced by Lee Pomeroy.
I hope this is of interest.
Cheers.
